When Would It Be Easier?

Have you ever thought that it would have been so much easier to follow Jesus if we had been one of the first apostles who literally got to walk and talk with Him? I have, though I'm not sure I am right.

Which would be easier - following Him then or now?

Option 1: Knowing Jesus in the first century
One on hand, I have all the miracles of Jesus I get to witness firsthand. I get to see Him walk on water, feed the multitudes from a few loaves and fishes, and heal countless people.
On the other hand, I only have the Old Testament which would inform me that the Messiah is coming. Then "He" gets here, but none of the super religious people, the ones who know the Old Testament better than I do, think it is Him.

Option 2: Knowing Jesus in the 21st Century
Have the benefit of 20/20 hindsight. I now know that Jesus was, ya know, 'Jesus', the long-awaited Messiah.

(Shoot me a quick reply: What do you think? Do you think you would be a closer follower of Christ in the first century or 21st century?)

The bottom line is that we now know who Jesus is and what He has done. We have the Bible that gives us not all we want to know, but all we need to know, about the Savior.

Let me be clear...

The call on the life of the follower of Christ is in Luke 9:

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

In which century would it be easier to follow Jesus by denying ourselves? By taking up our cross and losing our life for Him?

Whatever you answer, know this: we live in 2018. Whether or not it is easier, harder or the exact same, that is where we are, so this is when we will serve Him. He must have us here for a reason.

He will not abandon us, but will guide us as we live for Him.

Believe that.

See you Sunday!
