This Sunday, we continue exploring our core values in line with Rockland's vision of Connecting All Generations to Jesus as we study Value #2: "Connect".
Merriam-Webster uses the following words to describe the meaning of Connect: "To join, weave, entwine, link, secure and to place or establish in relationship". Each one of these descriptions gave further meaning to the idea of connect, however, the last one, establish in relationship, really caught my attention and gives a hint of what connection in biblical community looks like.
As I reflect on the various Biblical communities that I have been a part of over the years, I recognize the deep impact they had on my faith and growing relationship with Christ. Each community looked different and touched my life in a unique way. However, they all had a common purpose; to build relationships with other Christians around the Word of God.
Our times together varied. Sometimes we would dig into God’s Word, discuss where we saw Him working or wrestle with struggles we were experiencing at that moment. Other times we just gathered to share a meal together, fellowship and exchange conversation. On occasion, we even went away for a weekend of fun. One thing remained constant; supporting and growing in our Christian faith.
We set aside time for one another. We did life together. We poured God’s love into one another. These individuals spurred me on to grow deeper in my love and personal knowledge of Christ. They were important relationships; some exist to this day, thirty plus years later. I thank our God for bringing them into my life.
How great would it be if every member or regular attendee were involved in a Biblical community at Rockland? So I encourage you to look around; find a community where you can connect with others, establish relationships, be encouraged and grow in your faith. Yes, it takes time. However, I guarantee, you won’t be disappointed. In fact, I believe you will be richly blessed as you see God’s presence in the midst of these relationships .
He promises this: “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:20
